68250 Refrigeration Car
.
Commonly called reefers by railroads these refrigeration cars
were used to ship perishables, like vegetables, all across the country.
This particular car was built in 1954 and actually used blocks of ice covered
with salt, to provide the refrigeration. The blocks of ice were dropped
into hoppers at each end of the car from four hatches on the roof.
This car, along with 2 tank cars, were the first pieces of freight equipment
on the HVSRy arriving about 1973.

25024 Refrigeration Car
.
This reefer and her sister car #25038 where
the next evolution in refrigeration. Know as Mechanical Reefers
these cars used diesel powered compressors to provide cold air within the
car.

NX
8886 Dry Ice Refrigeration Car
.
When the need arose for extra cold conditions, railroads might use these
Dry Ice cars. With insulated walls over one foot thick these
cars could satisfy the most extreme needs of shippers. These
cars are so well insulated that even today the interior temperature of
the car will reflect the outdoor conditions when the HVSRy crews last opened
the doors ! The HVSRy has three of these dry ice reefers, NX
#8883, #8886
and #8899 .

Hopper
ex-SCL 160835
.
The Bread & Butter of many Eastern railroads is transporting
of coal. Hopper cars are specially designed to dump their load through
the bottom of the car. This particular car reflects the modernization
from the older friction bearing to newer roller
bearing on its axles. Today the HVSRy largely uses this
hopper for transporting stone for track maintenance.
.Tank
Car GATX 31353
.
One of two tank cars donated by the Dupont Corp.
Back in the 1970's the HVSRy stored water in this car for monthy
boiler inspections on steam engine #33, because the lack of piped-in
water.

Built in the 1920's to standard USRA war specifications.

.Flat
car ex-DLA 60166
.
Several older ex-military flatcars were donated back in the mid 1990's.
All the flat cars have the older iron wheels and #60166 even has a special
storage
compartment. The HVSRy has sister flat cars DLA4005
, DLA42077 , DLA60167
.

These ex- MofW boxcars were a real asset between the transition from
the old engine house and the building of the new engine house.
These older boxcars were adapted for trackcrew use by Chessie System railroad.
Sister boxcars are C&O910006 , C&O910032
, C&O910056 , C&O921004
(
specialy converted for weilding ) .
