. URTX 68250  Refrigeration Car
.                          Commonly called reefers by railroads these refrigeration cars were used to ship perishables, like vegetables, all across the country.  This particular car was built in 1954 and actually used blocks of ice covered with salt, to provide the refrigeration.  The blocks of ice were dropped into hoppers at each end of the car from four hatches on the roof.   This car, along with 2 tank cars, were the first pieces of freight equipment on the HVSRy arriving about 1973.

.                             This reefer and her sister car #25038 where the next evolution in refrigeration.  Know as Mechanical Reefers these cars used diesel powered compressors to provide cold air within the car.

. NX 8886  Dry Ice Refrigeration Car
When the need arose for extra cold conditions, railroads might use these Dry Ice cars.   With insulated walls over one foot thick these cars could satisfy the most extreme needs of shippers.   These cars are so well insulated that even today the interior temperature of the car will reflect the outdoor conditions when the HVSRy crews last opened the doors !   The HVSRy has three of these dry ice reefers, NX #8883, #8886
 and #8899 .
